Rome, 15 juin 2025 – Le jeune laïc congolais Floribert Bwana Chui a été proclamé bienheureux ce dimanche lors d’une messe solennelle célébrée à la basilique Saint-Pierre, au Vatican. Une reconnaissance posthume pour son engagement inébranlable en faveur de l’honnêteté et de la justice, qui fait de lui le quatrième bienheureux congolais dans l’histoire de l’Église catholique.
Une vie au service de la vérité
Né le 13 juin 1981 à Goma, dans l’est de la République démocratique du Congo, Floribert Bwana Chui s’est illustré très tôt comme un jeune engagé dans sa foi. Catéchiste dès l’adolescence, il rejoint plus tard la Communauté de Sant’Egidio, où il s’investit dans des actions sociales en faveur des enfants des rues.
Après ses études, il intègre l’Office Congolais de Contrôle (OCC), d’abord à Kinshasa puis à Goma, où il est nommé chef de bureau. C’est dans l’exercice de ses fonctions qu’il se heurtera à un dilemme moral : valider ou non l’entrée de produits alimentaires impropres à la consommation, en provenance du Rwanda.
Le 7 juillet 2007, il est assassiné à Goma pour avoir refusé des pots-de-vin et s’être opposé à la distribution de ces produits dangereux. À seulement 26 ans, Floribert paie de sa vie son attachement à l’éthique, à la santé publique et à la dignité humaine.
Une béatification symbole de résistance morale
Le pape François, qui avait officiellement reconnu en novembre 2024 son martyre « pour l’honnêteté et l’intégrité morale », a salué ce dimanche la mémoire de ce jeune laïc « qui a préféré mourir plutôt que de trahir sa conscience ». Dans son homélie, le souverain pontife a déclaré :
« Que Floribert soit un modèle de courage et d’espérance pour les jeunes de la RDC et de toute l’Afrique. »
La messe de béatification a été présidée par le cardinal Marcello Semeraro, préfet du Dicastère des Causes des Saints, en présence de nombreuses personnalités ecclésiastiques et civiles, dont le cardinal Fridolin Ambongo, archevêque de Kinshasa, Mgr Willy Ngumbi, évêque de Goma, une délégation gouvernementale congolaise, ainsi que plusieurs membres de la Communauté de Sant’Egidio.
Une relique émouvante et une figure inspirante
Le portrait du nouveau bienheureux a été dévoilé en grande pompe, suivi de la présentation d’une relique symbolique : la veste que portait Floribert le jour de son assassinat, exposée devant l’autel, entourée de fleurs et de bougies. Une image poignante pour les fidèles venus de la RDC, d’Europe et d’ailleurs.
Décrit par ses proches comme un homme intègre, courageux et dévoué, Floribert Bwana Chui devient désormais un symbole vivant de la résistance à la corruption, un fléau qui gangrène de nombreuses institutions africaines. Son geste héroïque rappelle, selon la Communauté de Sant’Egidio, que
« le culte de l’argent ne peut pas étouffer l’avenir et les espoirs de l’Afrique. »
